Our hazardous materials officers …

… are true specialists in hazardous goods transport. At Industriepark Höchst and throughout Germany, they currently support more than 75 companies at over 45 locations with more than 260 operating areas in the safe handling of their hazardous goods transports – even across national borders. Many companies are glad that they can outsource the tasks of hazardous materials safety advisors to external experts so they can focus their own resources entirely on their core business. Infraserv Höchst not only serves customers in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, but also across a range of sectors, including automotive, life sciences, healthcare, and alternative fuel development.

The responsible work of dangerous goods safety advisors requires not only broad expertise in the requirements of a wide variety of dangerous goods and their classification into different dangerous goods classes, but also precise knowledge of logistical processes and current legal requirements. Dangerous goods safety advisors are the central point of contact for employees in all matters relating to the transport of dangerous goods and form an important interface with company management and the relevant authorities.

Hazardous goods – avoid risks during transport with the real professionals

Today, there is hardly any industry that can do without the use of hazardous substances – be it in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, in plastics and metal processing companies, or even in food production and clinics and hospitals. And as soon as dangerous goods are stored or shipped by road, rail, water, or air freight, there are sometimes life-threatening risks – for example, from unsafe packaging, tanks, or leaks that could allow toxic, flammable, or explosive substances to escape into the environment. These sources of danger must be reliably eliminated before the dangerous goods begin their journey.

The regulations governing dangerous goods on national and international transport routes are very complex. The tasks of dangerous goods safety advisors should therefore be entrusted to specialists who can focus entirely on this topic – such as the experienced, regularly trained dangerous goods experts at Infraserv. External dangerous goods safety advisors not only advise and support your own staff in their responsible activities, but also enable you to organize processes in a more streamlined, legally compliant, and efficient manner.

Which companies need a dangerous goods safety advisor?

In Section 1 of the Ordinance on the Appointment of Dangerous Goods Safety Advisors in Companies (GbV), the legislator stipulates that “entrepreneurs whose activities include the transport of dangerous goods by road, rail, navigable inland waterways, and sea-going vessels must appoint at least one dangerous goods safety advisor (Gb) in writing.” However, the regulation applies not only to “companies that transport dangerous goods, but may also apply to companies that trade in, store, transfer, or package dangerous goods.” Various exceptions include ...

  • Exempted transport of dangerous goods (50-ton rule)
  • Transport in limited quantities
  • Craft businesses
  • Self-employed drivers who do not have their own vehicles (this exemption does not apply to freight forwarders or the transport of radioactive and highly dangerous materials)

Lack of suitable in-house specialists puts companies in a difficult position

Companies involved in the transport of dangerous goods must apply particularly high standards of transport safety and comply with numerous international legal regulations. Given the shortage of skilled workers and the generational change among employees, companies often lack specialized dangerous goods expertise that is available at short notice. This is where experienced external dangerous goods safety advisors can fill the gap and provide long-term support for the legally compliant handling of dangerous goods classification and transport.

Being a hazardous materials officer, especially in more complex companies, is not a side job. The role requires expertise, full attention, and regular training. That is why it is often better to entrust the task to external specialists rather than your own employees, who may have to cope with the additional burden of their regular workload.
