Microplastics banned since mid-October 2023 - what matters now

Since October 17, 2023, the placing on the market of microbeads in cosmetics is prohibited. The same applies to loose glitter. Further microplastic bans will follow after the respective transition periods have expired. Are you prepared?

What you should know

The legal basis for the ban is Regulation (EU) 2023/2055 amending Annex XVII of the REACH Regulation. It regulates the gradual restriction of microplastic applications. But what exactly does the term microplastics mean?

It refers to all synthetic polymer particles that are smaller than 5 millimetres in diameter - or 15 millimetres if they are fibers. The lower limit for particle size is 0.1 or 0.3 micrometers. The bad thing about microplastics is that the particles are insoluble and difficult to break down. They also accumulate along the food chain and have even been detected in the human body.

Beware of stumbling blocks

The list of products containing microplastics is as long as the ban regulations are complex. For example, owners and operators of artificial turf pitches and other sports facilities are granted a transitional period of eight years to replace the plastic granules strewn on the pitches. For other products, however, different deadlines apply. Depending on the product and application, the transition periods range from four to twelve years. The key question is therefore: Are you also affected?
